Today’s Sermon: Our Own Worst Enemy

For ‘the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,’ as it is written.

Romans 2:24

Just as the TV series of the Holy Bible was a gross misrepresentation of the Christian Faith, the “Preachers of LA” will be a disaster.  May I and others strive to live in truth, humility, and sobriety as we seek communion with God.

Thank you Bro. E. Dewey Smith.

Preachers (pimps) of LA/Nepthali criticism:

There was a legendary comic strip character called Pogo. One day, Pogo went looking for his enemy. Having seen himself in a mirror he declared, “We have met the enemy and he is us.” Not long ago, the Supreme Court made a couple of decisions that can pave the way for same-sex marriage to become the law of the land. Christians who rightfully reject the notion that a homosexual marriage is the same a heterosexual one will be seen as culturally backwards, behind the times, mean-spirited, and hateful. Already there is at least one case where a photographer is being sued because he refused to work at a gay marriage ceremony and reception. The LGBT community is an enemy to the time-honored standard of God creating male and female and for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife and the two will become one flesh. This standard was given to us not only in the ancient words of Genesis, but also and most importantly by Jesus Christ whom we worship.

As unfortunate as these decisions are and despite the threat the LGBT community poses to us in the future, I dare to agree with the point of the Pogo comic character. The real enemy of the Christian faith is the one who stands in the mirror. A mirror of ministry will be reflected to a world-wide audience this fall called “Preachers of LA.” This TV reality show follows the public and private lives of well-known ministers exposing the type of men they really are. A clip of the show can be found on You Tube. If the show episodes are anything like the clip, which is bad enough, our well-known ministry leaders are doing far more damage to the body of Christ than any “marriage equality” movement could ever do.

Looking at the text; “You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?” One of the characters, Bishop Clarence McClendon, is on record teaching that the story of the Fall of Man in Genesis chapter 3 had to do with tithing. That when we touch the 10% of our income that belongs to God, we bring a curse on our 90%. By taking this and other scriptures out of context, he and other “prosperity preachers” have enriched themselves to a point where they live in luxury. Another bishop in this show, Ron Gibson of the Church of God in Christ, wants to emulate the lifestyle of Jay-z or P. Diddy. Meanwhile Jesus declared, “The birds of the air have nest, foxes have holes, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” Greed has become the popular model for ministry as many Christians think it makes sense to follow a rich preacher rather than a poor one.

Again, the text begs the question; “You who say ‘Do not commit adultery,’ do you commit adultery?” Pastor and Gospel “star” Dietrich Haddon not only has a child out-of-wedlock. But, when his live-in child’s mother declares that they need to be married, he looks at her in unbelief. Go to You Tube and look at the clip. I am not making this up. He excuses his contrary mentality with the statement, “Yes, I am a pastor. But, at the end of the day, I am a man.” To have a child or children outside of marriage is one thing. But, when one doesn’t humble himself and strive to live right is another. And if the pastors are running women and making excuses instead of repentance (like many do at these conferences), if the preachers aren’t living right, how can we expect the world to live right? No, I don’t support gay marriage. But, at least Adam & Steve or Alice & Eve want to look legitimate.

“You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?” Bishop Noel Jones is in a relationship with the star of another reality show, Lisa Rae. Again, look at the clip. He sees their relationship as something to be won and he says, “I am a Prize.” This man doesn’t even have the sense to be humble and give himself to his woman and Christ gave himself to the church. He sets himself up on his own pedestal and has a world-wide following to further inflate his ego. Yet, the Son of Man didn’t come to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for all.

We can be disappointed and discouraged about how the Supreme Court ruled on gay marriage, abortion, and everything else that the Bible and Holy Tradition stands against. But, our main problem is with us and those who lead us. Christianity is becoming known for greed, immorality, and arrogance. These things are the beams in our eyes that prevent us from removing the specks in the eyes of others. Let us pray and struggle against the hypocrisy in ourselves and our churches first.
